How often should I clean my carpets?
The problem with dirty carpets is that they are not always very easy to spot. Most of the time, people overlook the proper cleaning of their carpets and rugs, leading to the unhealthy accumulation of dust and soil. This could be the main reason behind allergies and other health issues.
It is often recommended to have your carpets professionally cleaned at least once a year. You can do this less often if the carpet is not used frequently. But it is recommended to do this more often if your carpets are heavily used or if you have pets at home.
Apart from hiring a professional carpet cleaning service, your in-home carpet cleaning frequency will depend on the degree of soil and how often your carpets are used:
1- Even if you follow no shoes policy at home, your carpets would still need to be vacuumed at least once a week. Dust is formed from pollen grains, lint and dead skin cells. You need to remove this dust before it sets and sinks into the depths of the fibers.
2- Clean the spots as soon as they happen. Don’t wait until a spot dries. Blot the spot to absorb all the moisture. Baking soda and vinegar usually work to remove most stains. Always clean the stain from the outside towards the center. If you plan on using a professional cleaning solution, make sure that you test it on a discrete spot as it may cause discoloration.
3- Have low traffic areas professionally cleaned every 12 to 18 months.
4- Have your carpets restored every 2 years or as per manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that they stay in perfect condition.
1- If you have children, a pet or live in a household with elderly people, then you might need to have your carpets cleaned more often. Vacuum your carpets twice or three times a week to prevent the dust from sinking in and becoming harder to remove.
2- With a kid or a pet in the house, you might be subject to more stains and spots. Use an enzyme cleaner to clean pet stains after absorbing the moisture. If the odor remains, use baking soda to absorb the stink. Vacuum the carpet to remove the dry white powder.
3- Sometimes professional cleaning is the only way to get rid of tough stains and bad odors. You will need to have your carpets cleaned at least every 6 months.
4- Have your carpets restored once per year to maintain their condition.
1- If you have a big family or a large number of pets, you will feel the need to vacuum your carpets every day. This could be the only way to get rid of dust and pet hair that might affect the appearance of your carpets.
2- Heavy spots are better cleaned by professionals. Resort to deep extraction to remove tough stains and to thoroughly clean your carpets every 3 to 6 months.
3- It is better to restore your carpets every three months since they will be more subject to wear.
The proper maintenance of your carpets will maintain their condition and colors. You will be able to enjoy your clean and fresh carpets for years.
